The Legendary Founding of Rome
The story of Rome's humble beginnings is shrouded in myth and legend. According to tradition, the city was founded by the twin brothers Romulus and Remus in 753 BC. Abandoned as infants, they were raised by a she-wolf and eventually grew to become fierce warriors. One day, they quarreled over where to build their city, and Romulus killed his brother in a fit of rage. Rome was thus founded on a tragic act of fratricide.
The early history of Rome is fraught with challenges. The city was constantly under threat from neighboring tribes, and its citizens had to fight for their survival. However, the Romans were a resilient people, and they eventually emerged victorious from their struggles. By the 5th century BC, Rome had become a powerful city-state, dominating the Italian peninsula.
The Rise of the Roman Empire
The Roman Empire was one of the greatest empires in history. It stretched from Britain in the west to the Middle East in the east, and from North Africa in the south to the Danube River in the north. The empire was a hub of culture, commerce, and learning, and it had a profound impact on the development of Western civilization.
The Roman Empire was founded by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. Caesar was a brilliant general and politician, and he led the Romans to victory in many wars. He was also a ruthless dictator, and he was eventually assassinated in 44 BC. After Caesar's death, his adopted son Augustus became the first emperor of Rome. Augustus was a wise and capable ruler, and he brought peace and prosperity to the empire.
The Pax Romana
The Pax Romana, or Roman Peace, was a period of great prosperity and stability in the Roman Empire. It lasted for over 200 years, from the reign of Augustus to the reign of Marcus Aurelius. During this time, the empire reached its greatest extent, and its citizens enjoyed a high standard of living. The Pax Romana was a golden age for the Roman Empire, and it is still remembered as one of the most peaceful and prosperous periods in human history.
However, the Pax Romana eventually came to an end. In the 3rd century AD, the empire began to decline. The reasons for this decline are complex, but they include political instability, economic problems, and military threats. By the 5th century AD, the Roman Empire had collapsed, and Europe was plunged into chaos.
The Legacy of Rome
The Roman Empire may have fallen, but its legacy continues to shape the world today. Roman law, Roman architecture, and Roman literature have all had a profound impact on Western civilization. The Roman Empire was a melting pot of cultures, and its citizens came from all over the world. This diversity has left a lasting legacy, and it is reflected in the many different languages, religions, and cultures that exist today.
'Stories From Roman History Illustrated' is a captivating account of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
