Early Life and Career

Champlain was born in Brouage, France, in 1574. He was the son of a naval captain and grew up with a love of the sea. Champlain made his first voyage to the New World in 1603, when he explored the St. Lawrence River. He was impressed by the land and its potential for colonization.
