Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer, cartographer, and founder of Quebec City. He is considered one of the most important figures in the history of Canada.

Champlain was born in Brouage, France, in 1567. He began his career as a soldier and navigator, and in 1603 he was commissioned by King Henry IV of France to explore the New World.

Champlain made several voyages to North America, and in 1608 he founded Quebec City. Quebec City became the capital of New France, the French colony in North America.

Champlain spent the rest of his life exploring and mapping the New World. He made several important discoveries, including the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River.

Champlain was also a skilled diplomat. He negotiated treaties with several Native American tribes, and he helped to establish trade relations between France and the New World.

Champlain died in Quebec City in 1635. He was buried in the crypt of the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church.

Champlain's Legacy
