General Sir Edward Bulfin Ireland was one of the most successful British generals of World War II. He played a key role in the Dunkirk evacuation, the invasion of Normandy, and the liberation of Europe. Despite his accomplishments, Ireland is largely forgotten today. Early Life and Career
Edward Bulfin Ireland was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1898. He was the son of a British Army officer, and he was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Ireland was commissioned into the Royal Irish Regiment in 1914, and he served in the trenches in France during World War I.
After the war, Ireland served in a variety of staff positions. He attended the Staff College, Camberley, and he served as a brigade major and a battalion commander. In 1939, Ireland was appointed to command the 1st Infantry Division. He led the division during the Battle of France in 1940, and he played a key role in the Dunkirk evacuation.
Operation Overlord
In 1943, Ireland was appointed to command the I Corps. He was responsible for planning and executing the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. Ireland's corps landed on Sword Beach, and they fought their way inland against stiff German resistance. Ireland's leadership was critical to the success of the invasion, and he was awarded the Distinguished Service Free Download for his actions.
Liberation of Europe
After D-Day, Ireland's corps continued to fight its way through France and into Germany. Ireland was wounded in action twice, but he refused to be evacuated. He led his corps to victory in the Battle of the Bulge, and he was present at the liberation of Paris and Berlin.
