Mouth Sweeter Than Salt: An African Memoir
Fatima Mernissi was born in 1940 in Fez, Morocco, into a traditional Muslim household. Her father was a wealthy landowner and her mother was a devout Muslim woman. Mernissi grew up in a world where women were expected to be subservient to men. They were not allowed to go to school, they could not own property, and they could not divorce their husbands.
But Mernissi was different. From a young age, she questioned the status quo and dreamed of a better life for herself and for all women. She secretly read her father's books and attended lectures at the local mosque. When she was 17 years old, she ran away from home and enrolled in a university in Rabat.

Mernissi's journey was not easy. She faced prejudice and discrimination from both men and women. But she never gave up on her dreams. She went on to become a successful academic and a leading voice for women's rights in the Muslim world.
In her memoir, Mouth Sweeter Than Salt, Mernissi tells the story of her life and her struggle for equality. She writes about her childhood in Fez, her experiences as a student in Rabat, and her work as an activist and scholar.
Mouth Sweeter Than Salt is an inspiring and unforgettable memoir. It is a must-read for anyone interested in women's rights, Islamic feminism, or the history of Morocco.
