Ordained a priest in 1943, Kapaun served as a parish priest in Kansas before volunteering for duty as a chaplain in the United States Army during World War II. His unwavering faith and compassionate service earned him the respect and admiration of both his fellow soldiers and the civilians he encountered.
The Korean Conflict
In 1950, with the outbreak of the Korean War, Kapaun once again heeded the call to serve, joining the 8th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division. As a chaplain, he became a spiritual beacon for the men of his unit, offering solace, guidance, and hope amidst the horrors of war.
Throughout the conflict, Kapaun's unwavering faith and unwavering courage inspired his fellow soldiers. He risked his own life to administer last rites to the wounded and dying, offering comfort to the grieving, and leading his men in prayer.
A Legacy of Heroism
In November 1950, Kapaun's unit was surrounded by Chinese forces at Unsan. Despite overwhelming odds, they held their ground, and Kapaun continued to tend to the wounded and provide spiritual support to his men.
When the unit was finally overrun, Kapaun was taken prisoner and subjected to brutal treatment. Throughout his captivity, he remained a source of inspiration and strength for his fellow prisoners. He organized prayer services, led them in songs, and shared his meager rations with those who were weaker.
On May 23, 1951, Kapaun died in a prisoner of war camp, surrounded by his fellow prisoners. His last words, as he lay dying, were "I forgive you."
The Power of Faith and Sacrifice
"The Story of Chaplain Kapaun" is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the enduring legacy of a true hero. Through its meticulously researched narrative, the book paints a vivid picture of Kapaun's life, his unwavering devotion to God, and his unwavering commitment to his fellow man.
Curran's masterful storytelling reveals the complexities of Kapaun's character, his struggles, and his triumphs. The book explores the profound impact Kapaun had on those around him, both during the war and in the decades that followed.
A Hero of Our Time
In 2005, Pope John Paul II declared Kapaun a "Servant of God," the first step towards sainthood. His cause for canonization is currently under investigation by the Vatican.
Kapaun's story continues to inspire generations of Americans. His example of selfless sacrifice, unwavering faith, and enduring heroism serves as a reminder of the extraordinary power of the human spirit.
