Early Life and Education
Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma was born on January 27, 1949, in Natal, South Africa. She is the daughter of Priscilla Dlamini, a nurse, and Samson Dlamini, a school principal. Dlamini Zuma attended the Ohlange High School in Durban, where she was an active member of the African National Congress Youth League. She went on to study medicine at the University of Zululand, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1976.
Political Career
Dlamini Zuma began her political career in the 1970s, when she joined the African National Congress (ANC). She was arrested by the apartheid government in 1977 and spent two years in prison. After her release, she went into exile in the United Kingdom, where she continued to work for the ANC.
In 1990, Dlamini Zuma returned to South Africa after the ANC was unbanned. She was elected to the ANC's National Executive Committee (NEC) in 1991 and served as the party's Deputy Secretary-General from 1993 to 1996.
In 1999, Dlamini Zuma was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Thabo Mbeki. She held this position until 2009, when she was appointed Minister of Home Affairs by President Jacob Zuma. Dlamini Zuma served as Minister of Home Affairs until 2014, when she was elected Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
