On April 7, 2022, history was made when Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed as the 116th Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Her appointment marked a watershed moment not only for the court but for the nation itself, as she became the first Black woman to ever serve on the nation's highest court.
Jackson's journey to the Supreme Court is a testament to her brilliance, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to justice. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1970, she was raised in a working-class neighborhood by parents who instilled in her a passion for education and public service.
After graduating magna cum laude from Harvard College and the Harvard Law School, where she served as an editor of the renowned Harvard Law Review, Jackson began her legal career as a clerk for Judge Bruce M. Selya of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. She went on to practice law in private firms and served as a federal public defender before being appointed to the U.S. Sentencing Commission in 2009.
In 2013, Jackson was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. She was unanimously confirmed by the Senate and quickly established herself as a fair and impartial jurist with a deep understanding of the law and a commitment to equal justice.
In 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Jackson to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. She was again confirmed by the Senate, this time with a 53-47 vote along party lines. Jackson served on the D.C. Circuit for less than a year before being nominated to the Supreme Court.
Jackson's confirmation to the Supreme Court was a highly controversial process, with Republicans largely opposing her nomination and Democrats strongly supporting it. Jackson's supporters praised her intellect, experience, and commitment to justice, while her detractors raised concerns about her judicial philosophy and her record as a public defender.
Despite the controversy, Jackson was ultimately confirmed by a 53-47 vote, with three Republicans joining all Democrats in supporting her nomination. Jackson was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on June 30, 2022.
