The Extraordinary Pact

In 1967, in the underprivileged neighborhood of Chicago's West Side, Marva Collins embarked on a mission that would reshape the lives of 15 young children. A former nurse who left her profession due to racial discrimination, Collins believed in the transformative power of education. She opened a small, ramshackle classroom, which she named the West Side Preparatory School, determined to nurture young minds and equip them for success against all odds.

On that fateful first day, Collins made a bold promise to her students: if they agreed to study hard and stay in school, she would guarantee that every one of them would attend college. It was an ambitious pledge, considering the challenges these children faced daily. Poverty, crime, and a lack of educational resources loomed large, threatening to derail their dreams.

The Nurturing Environment

Undeterred, Collins created a nurturing environment where her students felt safe, respected, and inspired. She instilled in them a deep appreciation for learning, teaching them to question, explore, and think critically. Collins demanded excellence but also provided unwavering support, becoming a surrogate mother to many of her students who came from broken homes or faced difficult circumstances.

Overcoming Obstacles

The path to college was not without its obstacles. The school faced financial struggles, and Collins often had to dip into her own savings to keep it afloat. The students encountered prejudice and discrimination both inside and outside the classroom. But through it all, they persevered, driven by Collins' unwavering belief in their potential.

Collins also faced criticism from some within the educational establishment who questioned her unconventional teaching methods. She refused to conform to standardized testing and instead focused on developing her students' critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities. Time and again, she proved her detractors wrong, as her students consistently outperformed their peers on standardized tests and went on to achieve great success in higher education.

The Fulfillment of the Promise

Years later, the fruits of Collins' labor became evident. In 1981, the first group of 15 students who had made the pact with Collins graduated from high school. Every single one of them had been accepted to college. Over the years, more than 90% of West Side Preparatory School graduates went on to earn college degrees, a remarkable achievement considering their disadvantaged backgrounds.
