Early Life
Florence Ballard was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 30, 1943. She was the daughter of Jesse Ballard, a steelworker, and Bertha Ballard, a homemaker. Ballard had three older siblings, Jesse Jr., Norma, and Barbara.
Ballard began singing at an early age. She sang in her church choir and at local talent shows. In 1959, she met Mary Wilson and Diana Ross, and the three girls formed a singing group called The Primettes.
The Supremes
In 1961, The Primettes signed with Motown Records and changed their name to The Supremes. The group's first single, "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes," was a hit, and The Supremes quickly became one of the most popular girl groups in the world.
Ballard was the lead singer on many of The Supremes' biggest hits, including "Stop! In the Name of Love," "Baby Love," and "You Can't Hurry Love." She was known for her powerful voice and her ability to connect with audiences.
Personal Struggles
Despite her success with The Supremes, Ballard struggled with personal problems. She was addicted to alcohol and drugs, and she suffered from depression. In 1967, she was arrested for drunk driving and possession of marijuana.
Ballard's personal problems led to her being fired from The Supremes in 1967. She was replaced by Cindy Birdsong, and The Supremes continued to be one of the most successful girl groups in the world.
Later Years
After being fired from The Supremes, Ballard struggled to find success as a solo artist. She released a few singles, but none of them were hits. She also appeared in a few films and television shows, but her acting career never took off.
In the early 1970s, Ballard moved to Los Angeles, where she lived in poverty. She continued to struggle with addiction and depression. In 1976, she was diagnosed with cancer.
Ballard died from a heart attack on February 22, 1976. She was 32 years old.
