Castro's story is one of hope, determination, and perseverance. He was born into a poor family in the West Side barrio of San Antonio. About the Author

Joaquin Castro was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1974. He is the son of Mexican immigrants. Castro attended public schools and went on to earn degrees from Stanford University and Harvard Law School. After graduating from law school, Castro returned to San Antonio and began working as a lawyer. He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2002 and served for eight years. In 2012, Castro was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
