John Lewis was an American politician and civil rights leader who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020. He was a prominent leader of the civil rights movement and was one of the original Freedom Riders.

Lewis was born in Troy, Alabama, in 1940. He grew up in a sharecropping family and experienced racial discrimination firsthand. As a young man, he became involved in the civil rights movement and participated in sit-ins, protests, and other nonviolent demonstrations.
