In her lyrical and moving memoir, Eden Across the Street, Ann Howard Creel takes us on a journey through the landscapes of her childhood, memory, and the search for home.
Creel's memoir begins in the small town of Eden, Mississippi, where she spent her early years. She paints a vivid picture of a childhood filled with the joys of nature, the warmth of family, and the innocence of youth. But Eden is also a place of secrets and sorrows, and Creel's idyllic childhood is shattered by the sudden death of her father.
After her father's death, Creel's family moves to the suburbs of Memphis, Tennessee. There, she struggles to find her place in a new and unfamiliar world. She is haunted by memories of Eden and the loss of her father, and she finds herself drawn to the natural world as a source of comfort and solace.
As Creel grows older, she continues to search for Eden, both in the physical world and in the depths of her own memory. She travels to different places, trying to find a place where she feels at home. But it is not until she returns to Eden that she finally finds what she has been looking for.
Eden Across the Street is a beautifully written and deeply moving memoir about the power of place, memory, and the human spirit. Creel's journey is one that will resonate with anyone who has ever searched for a place to belong.
