David Bowie was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His music, fashion, and art challenged conventions and inspired generations. This book tells the story of Bowie's life and career, from his early days as a struggling musician to his global stardom.
Early Life and Career
David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in London, England, on January 8, 1947. He began playing music as a child and formed his first band, The Konrads, at the age of 15. After changing his name to David Bowie to avoid confusion with another musician named Davy Jones, he released his debut album, David Bowie, in 1967. The album was unsuccessful, but Bowie's next album, The Man Who Sold the World, released in 1970, was a critical and commercial success.
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
In 1972, Bowie released his breakthrough album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The album was a concept album that told the story of Ziggy Stardust, a rock star who is destined to die on stage. The album was a huge commercial success and helped to establish Bowie as a global star. Bowie continued to release successful albums throughout the 1970s, including Hunky Dory (1971),Aladdin Sane (1973),Diamond Dogs (1974),and Station to Station (1976).
The Thin White Duke
In the late 1970s, Bowie's music became more experimental. He released the albums Low (1977),"Heroes" (1977),and Lodger (1979),which were all characterized by their cold, industrial sound. Bowie also developed a new persona, the Thin White Duke, who was a detached and emotionless figure. The Thin White Duke appeared on the cover of Bowie's album "Heroes" and in the music video for the song "Ashes to Ashes."
The 1980s and Beyond
In the 1980s, Bowie returned to a more commercial sound. He released the albums Let's Dance (1983),Tonight (1984),and Never Let Me Down (1987),which were all huge commercial successes. Bowie also starred in several films during the 1980s, including The Hunger (1983),Labyrinth (1986),and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988).
Later Career and Death
Bowie continued to release music and art throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He released the albums Black Tie White Noise (1993),Outside (1995),Earthling (1997),'Hours...' (1999),Heathen (2002),Reality (2003),and The Next Day (2013). Bowie also starred in several films during this time, including Basquiat (1996),The Prestige (2006),and Zoolander 2 (2016).
David Bowie died of liver cancer on January 10, 2016, just two days after his 69th birthday. He left behind a legacy of music, fashion, and art that continues to inspire generations.
