Cleopatra VII Philopator was the last pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt. She was a powerful and charismatic ruler who played a major role in the history of the Roman Empire. Cleopatra's life has been the subject of countless books, movies, and TV shows. However, until now there has not been a comprehensive biography that covers her entire life, from her childhood to her tragic death.
Childhood and Early Reign
Cleopatra was born in 69 BC in Alexandria, Egypt. Her father, Ptolemy XII Auletes, was a weak and unpopular ruler. Cleopatra's mother was Cleopatra V Tryphaena. Cleopatra had two older sisters, Berenice IV and Cleopatra VI Tryphaena, and one younger brother, Ptolemy XIII. Cleopatra was a beautiful and intelligent child. She was educated in the Greek language and literature, and she was fluent in several other languages, including Egyptian, Koine Greek, and Arabic.
In 51 BC, Ptolemy XII died and Cleopatra became co-regent with her brother, Ptolemy XIII. Ptolemy XIII was only 12 years old at the time, and Cleopatra was the de facto ruler of Egypt.
Caesar and Pompey
In 48 BC, Julius Caesar arrived in Egypt in pursuit of his rival, Pompey. Caesar was immediately smitten with Cleopatra, and she with him. Cleopatra became Caesar's lover and ally, and she helped him to defeat Pompey. Caesar then installed Cleopatra as the sole ruler of Egypt.
Cleopatra and Caesar had a son together, Ptolemy XV Caesarion. Caesarion was Caesar's only legitimate son, and he was considered to be the heir to the Roman Empire.
Antony and Octavian
After Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, Cleopatra allied herself with Mark Antony. Antony was one of Caesar's most trusted generals, and he was now the ruler of the eastern Roman Empire. Cleopatra and Antony had a passionate love affair, and they had three children together.
In 31 BC, Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian, Caesar's adopted son, at the Battle of Actium. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt, where they were both defeated and killed by Octavian's forces.
Death and Legacy
Cleopatra died in 30 BC at the age of 39. She was defeated by Octavian, and she committed suicide by poisoning herself. Cleopatra's death marked the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the beginning of Roman rule over Egypt.
Cleopatra was a complex and fascinating woman. She was a powerful ruler, a skilled diplomat, and a brilliant strategist. She was also a beautiful and charismatic woman who inspired love and loyalty in those who knew her.
Cleopatra's life has been the subject of countless books, movies, and TV shows. However, until now there has not been a comprehensive biography that covers her entire life, from her childhood to her tragic death.
Cleopatra: Life From Beginning to End is the definitive biography of one of the most iconic women in history.
