In 1942, 23-year-old Joe O'Donnell was a young American soldier serving in the Philippines when his ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. He survived the attack and was taken prisoner by the Japanese.
O'Donnell was transported to a POW camp in Japan, where he endured years of harsh treatment and near-starvation. In 1945, he was transferred to Hiroshima, where he was forced to work as a slave laborer.
On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. O'Donnell was just over a mile from the epicenter of the blast. He survived, but he was severely injured and irradiated.
O'Donnell was one of the few Americans to survive the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. He returned to the United States and spent the rest of his life sharing his story with others.
By Hellship to Hiroshima is O'Donnell's firsthand account of his experiences during World War II. It is a powerful and moving story of survival, courage, and resilience.
