William Bligh was a master mariner who commanded the HMS Bounty, which was infamously mutinied against in 1789. Bligh was a skilled navigator and a strict disciplinarian, but he was also a harsh and unforgiving leader. His actions on the Bounty led to a mutiny that resulted in the deaths of several of his crew members. Despite the mutiny, Bligh went on to have a successful career in the Royal Navy, and he is remembered today as one of the greatest navigators of all time.

Bligh was born in 1754 in Plymouth, England. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1787, he was given command of the HMS Bounty and sent on a mission to Tahiti to collect breadfruit plants. The breadfruit was a valuable food source that could be used to feed slaves in the British colonies. Bligh was a harsh and unforgiving leader, and he often treated his crew members with cruelty. This led to a great deal of resentment among the crew, and eventually to the mutiny.

The mutiny on the Bounty occurred on April 28, 1789. Led by Fletcher Christian, a group of mutineers seized control of the ship and set Bligh and his loyalists adrift in a small boat. Bligh and his men then embarked on a remarkable journey of over 3,500 miles to safety. They eventually reached Timor, where they were rescued by the Dutch East India Company.

Bligh's experiences on the Bounty had a profound impact on him. He became a more compassionate and understanding leader, and he went on to have a successful career in the Royal Navy. He served as governor of New South Wales from 1805 to 1808, and he was also instrumental in the founding of the colony of Tasmania. Bligh died in London in 1817 at the age of 63.

Bligh Master Mariner is the definitive biography of one of the most famous and controversial figures in maritime history. Author Richard Hough provides a detailed account of Bligh's life and career, and he offers a balanced assessment of his strengths and weaknesses. Bligh was a complex and flawed character, but he was also a great leader and a skilled navigator. His story is a testament to the human spirit, and it is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope.
