Early Life in Vietnam

Micky was born in 1966 in Saigon, Vietnam. Her family lived in poverty, and her childhood was marred by the Vietnam War. When she was just seven years old, her family fled their home to escape the escalating violence. They boarded a small boat with hundreds of other refugees, embarking on a perilous journey across the South China Sea.

Harsh Conditions and Loss

The boat trip was fraught with danger and hardship. The refugees were crammed into cramped quarters with little food or water. Many succumbed to illness or hunger during the harrowing voyage. Micky witnessed unspeakable horrors, including the death of her beloved father.

Arrival in Australia

After weeks at sea, Micky's boat finally reached Australia. She and her family were welcomed by a country that was initially unfamiliar and overwhelming. The cultural differences were stark, and the refugees faced language barriers, discrimination, and prejudice.

Resilience and Adaptability

Despite the challenges, Micky demonstrated remarkable resilience. She learned English, embraced her new surroundings, and enrolled in school. With the support of her teachers, classmates, and a foster family, she began to rebuild her life.

Pursuit of Education

Micky's determination to excel was unwavering. She excelled in her studies and went on to pursue higher education. In 2002, she graduated from Macquarie University with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences.

Writing and Activism

Micky's experiences as a refugee inspired her to share her story with the world. In 2004, she co-authored "My Country, My Story," a memoir that chronicled her childhood in Vietnam and her journey as a refugee. The book received critical acclaim and shed light on the plight of refugees worldwide.

Beyond writing, Micky has dedicated herself to activism. She works tirelessly to raise awareness about refugee issues and promote social justice. She has served as a board member of several non-profit organizations and has been a vocal advocate for the rights of refugees and migrants.

Recognition and Awards

Micky's contributions have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. In 2019, she was awarded the Free Download of Australia Medal for her services to the community through her writing and activism. She has also been a recipient of the Churchill Fellowship and the National Young Achiever Award.
